Early puzzle

8 02 2009

The new semester has just begun and it’s already full of puzzles..

There are MIPS, RTL, TLM from the digital processor structure

There are HAPs, PSTN, BTS, FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, DAB, DVB, from the communication system lectures

What are they??!!

Later on, I found that

1. MIPS stands for Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages. It is a RISC (pronounced risk) microprocessor architecture developed by MIPS Technologies.

1a. RISC stands for reduced instruction set computing, represents a CPU design strategy emphasizing the insight that simplified instructions that “do less” may still provide for higher performance if this simplicity can be utilized to make instructions execute very quickly.

1b. MIPS technologies is the company that popularly developed the RISC processor.

2. RTL stands for Register Transfer Level. It is a method in explaining the synchronous digital circuit. A circuit is described by the terms of signal flow between registers, the logical operation performed on those signals.

3. TLM stands for Transaction-level modeling. It is a high-level approach to modeling digital systems where details of communication among modules are separated from the details of the implementation of functional units or of the communication architecture.

4. HAPS stands for High Altitude Platform Station. It is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used as means of devices such as telecommunication transmitter-receiver. A HAPS usually stationed at 20 km high and used for weather forecast, traffic report, cellular communication, and so on. It uses a balloon (aircraft) sizing approximately 300 m in length and 40 m diameter.

5. PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. It is a technology used in nowadays fixed wired telephone system.

6. BTS stands for Base Transceiver Station. It is a piece of equipment that facilitates wireless communication between user equipment (UE) and a network. One of the application of BTS is the cellular network system in cellular phones.

7. FDMA, TDMA, CDMA

7a. CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. It is a channel access method utilized by various radio communication technologies.  CDMA employs spread spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where each transmitter is assigned a code) to allow multiple users to be multiplexed over the same physical channel.

7b. TDMA stands for Time Division Multiple Access. In contrast with CDMA, TDMA uses time division replacing codes for multi user using a channel.

7c. FDMA stands for Frequency  Division Multiple Access. FDMA uses frequency division for multi user using a channel.

8. DAB, DVB stands for Digital Audio/Video Broadcasting. They are suites of internationally accepted standards for broadcasting radio stations and digital televisions.

Fiuh, the puzzles solved (some of them)…haha
